Commonplace books, 1826-1859.

The first volume (1826 Nov. 26-1828 Oct. 22) contains extracts from mostly contemporary authors and poets and is beautifully illustrated with pen, ink and wash drawings. Subjects include Mrs. Heinan's residence, Passaic Falls, the Congregational Church in Quincy, Lake George, the sepulchre of Washington, the Unitarian Church in Washington, the (3rd) Church and parsonage in Jamaica Plain, Lafayette's residence La Grange, Newstead Abbey, Delaware Water Gap, Abbotsford, Christ Church in Cambridge, Rev. Peter Whitney's mansion and the Adams mansion in Quincy and other views of Quincy and environs. The extracts and illustrations are indexed. The second volume (1832 Nov. 3-ca. 1859) was complied with her daughter, Caroline Baker Whitney and contains poetry (possibly some original) and clippings. Entries are contained in Sears Cook Walker's Common place book upon the plan recommended and practiced by John Locke (Boston, 1821).

American astronomer who taught at Harvard, was an actuary for the Pennsylvania Company for the Insurance on Lives and Granting Annuities, served as an assistant at the United States Naval Observatory, and finally headed the Longitude Department of the United States Coast Survey. During his tenure at the U.S. Coast Survey, he developed the method of determining differences of longitude by telegraph.
